Discusses and makes recommendations on the use of Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) in Australian laboratories for pathology results reporting.

Scope

General
This Technical Report discusses and makes recommendations on the use of Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) in Australian laboratories for pathology results reporting. It describes inconsistencies in existing implementations of LOINC within public and private pathology institutions within Australia and against the prescribed standard Australian Pathology Codes Lists (AustPath). Recommendations are made in the following areas:
Review of certain AustPath codes.
Administration of AustPath codes.
The future utility of LOINC as NEHTA moves to create new standards based around Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine – Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT).
Mechanisms that may encourage the Pathology community to become more aware of AustPath and more proactive in implementation and evolution of Pathology terminologies.
Limitations
WP efforts to date have focused almost exclusively on a small subset (approximately 60) of the most common Chemical Pathology (Biochemistry) analytes. Only result reporting codes have been studied. No work has been performed on codes for ordering pathology tests.
The WP consists primarily of Chemical Pathologists, Chemical Pathology Scientists and IT professionals, and its work has therefore been biased toward Chemical Pathology. It should however be noted, that for most pathology laboratories that contributed to the review described here, the majority of currently implemented codes lie within the Biochemical arena. Therefore, these have typically been the areas for which laboratories have received queries regarding coding problems, and would appear to be the most logical starting point for review of LOINC in general use. Some basic comparison of Haematology Full Blood Count codes by the WP has occurred, however no recommendations have yet been formulated.
