\tThis information sheet provides a method for\u00a0calculating the pitting resistance and bending\u00a0strength of hypoid gears using the procedures of\u00a0ANSI\/AGMA 2003–B97.<\/p>\n

\nRATING FORMULAS<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n

\tThe knowledge and judgment required to evaluate\u00a0the various rating factors come from years of\u00a0accumulated experience in designing, manufacturing\u00a0and operating gear units. Empirical factors given\u00a0in this document are general in nature. AGMA\u00a0application standards may use other empirical\u00a0factors that are more closely suited to the particular\u00a0field of application. This document is intended for\u00a0use by the experienced gear designer, capable of\u00a0selecting reasonable values for the factors. It is not\u00a0intended for use by the engineering public at large.<\/p>\n

\nEXCEPTIONS<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n

\tThe exceptions in clause 1.2 of ANSI\/AGMA\u00a02003–B97 apply for hypoid gears. Lengthwise\u00a0sliding in hypoids reduces their efficiency. Torque\u00a0losses between driving pinion and gear range from 2\u00a0to 15 percent depending on the offset, spiral angles,\u00a0velocity and lubrication. The equations neglect\u00a0efficiency. The user can adjust input or output to\u00a0account for losses.<\/p>\n

\tThe material present in AGMA 932–A05 was originally included in an annex of the draft for\u00a0ANSI\/AGMA 2003–B97. The intent was to have a proposed rating method that would\u00a0complement the hypoid geometry presented in ANSI\/AGMA 2005–C95. It was removed\u00a0from ANSI\/AGMA2003–B97 during the ballot process to allow for its timely publication. The\u00a0committee felt this material should be expanded and presented in a separate information\u00a0sheet prior to standardization.<\/p>\n

\tThe first draft of AGMA 932–A05 was made in June, 2003. It was approved by the AGMA\u00a0Technical Division Executive Committee in January, 2005.<\/p>\n
