This Part of BS 4993 specifies a spectrophotometric method for the determination of the silica content of aluminium fluoride for industrial use.

Fusion of a test portion with sodium carbonate/boric acid, dissolution of the melt in nitric acid, formation of the yellow (oxidized) silico-molybdic complex, reduction to the blue form and spectrophotometric measurement at 815 nm.
