This Standard specifies the electrical Characteristics of the
\nunbalanced voltage digital interface circuit, normally implemented
\nin integrated circuit technology, that may be employed when
\nspecified for the interchange of serial binary signals between Data
\nTerminal Equipment (DTE) and Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment
\n(DCE) or in any point-to-point interconnection of serial binary
\nsignals between digital equipment.<\/p>\n

Devices complying to this Standard are electrically compatible
\nwith TIA\u00edEIA-423-B, ElMIA-562 and ElMIA-232-E interfaces. This
\nStandard is also compatible with !TLi-T Recommendations V.l O and
\nV.28.<\/p>\n

The interface circuit includes a generator connected by a
\ninterconnecting cable to a load consisting of a receiver. The
\nelectrical characteristics of the circuit are specified in terms of
\nrequired voltage, current, and resistance values obtained from
\ndirect measurements of the generator and receiver components at the
\ninterface points (connector). The logic function of the generator
\nand the receiver is not defined by this Standard, as it is
\napplication dependent. Minimum signal quality requirements are also
\nspecified to support the specified data signaling rates.<\/p>\n

It is intended that this Standard will be referenced by other
\nstandards that specify the other necessary components of an
\ninterface (e.g.., connector, pin assignments, function) for
\napplications where the electrical characteristics of an unbalanced
\nvoltage digital interface circuit are required. This Standard does
\nnot specify other characteristics of the interface (such as
\nprotocol and timing, etc.) essential for proper operation across
