The conversion to International System of Measurement presents to all members of the building industry the opportunity and challenge to rationalize dimensions for simplicity in manufacturing and construction processes. This Series of Standards on dimensional co-ordination is intended to be a framework on which this rationalization can take place. It has been prepared in metric units and will replace A31-1959, Modular Co-ordination in Building, when metric conversion is completed. For the preparation of these Standards, which will influence all dimensions used in building, a well balanced committee has been chosen to represent the industry. It has examined the dimensional standards of many countries, especially the U.K., France, Germany, Denmark, Australia and the U.S.A., and of the International Organization for Standardization) and adapted them to Canadian practice. The 100 mm dimension is the basic module in these Standards as in other dimensional standards in the world. The Standards are especially idealistic and are sufficiently flexible to be applicable to most forms of construction. They do not stipulate dimensions for any specific component, assembly or building type; they are guides, the only written guides available to the building industry for co-ordinating such dimensions. CSA Standard A31-1959 was the first of its kind for the Canadian building industry and was restricted to building practice at that time. Since then great strides have been made in industrialization and system building. The new Standards are intended to provide for coordination of all common components as they are now being produced and used with industrialized technology. The Standards may also be used by system builders even though their large organizations and specialization, often for a specific building type or sub-system, enable them to obtain co-ordination on an ad hoc basis. This Series of Standards was prepared by the CSA Committee on Dimensional Coordination in Building under the jurisdiction of the Sectional Committee on Building Materials and Products, and was formally approved by these Committees. The Committee welcomes any comments on these Standards as they will be revised according to experience in use.
