ESDU Struct 00.06.00 introduces a group of documents in the Structures Series that deal with the distribution of stresses in beams subjected to bending loads calculated under the assumption that plane sections remain plane. ESDU Struct 00.06.01 explains how the stress distribution over the cross section of a shell under bending may be calculated, while ESDU Struct 00.06.04 and Struct 00.06.05 deal with the shear centre of, respectively, a circular-arc section and a D-section. ESDU 77023 is also in this group and deals with the shear centre (and warping constant, see ESDU Struct 00.07.00) for lipped and unlipped channel- and Z-sections. All the sections considered are thin-walled. ESDU Struct 00.06.00 defines the term shear centre, explains its significance and emphasises that it is a property that depends only on the geometry of the section and is independent of the mode of support.
